Lip Flip
A small, carefully placed neuromodulator treatment that may subtly relax the upper-lip muscle so more of the lip shows when smiling.
What is a lip flip?
A lip flip uses a small amount of botulinum toxin near the upper lip to temporarily relax selected muscle fibers so the lip may roll slightly outward.
Does a lip flip add volume?
No. It does not add filler or physically enlarge the lip. Lip filler and a lip flip address different goals.
How long does it last?
The effect is temporary and may wear off sooner than treatment in some other areas because of frequent lip movement.
What are the tradeoffs?
Temporary difficulty with straws, whistling, certain words, drinking, or lip control can occur if the muscle is weakened more than desired.
What Is a Lip Flip?
A lip flip is a conservative neuromodulator treatment in which small injections are placed near selected fibers of the upper-lip muscle. As the muscle relaxes, the upper lip may roll slightly outward so more of the pink lip is visible, particularly when smiling.
It does not add volume and is not the same as lip filler.
Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler
A lip flip changes muscle pull and may subtly improve upper-lip show. Hyaluronic-acid filler adds physical volume and can be used to shape or balance the lips. Some patients may prefer one, a combination, or neither after assessment.
A lip flip may be considered for a lip that curls inward with smiling or for a conservative change without added volume. It cannot correct every concern or create the same result as filler.
What to Expect
Small injections are placed after evaluation of your smile and lip movement. Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or asymmetry can occur. The effect develops over several days and is temporary.
Because the treated muscle helps with drinking, speech, whistling, and controlling the upper lip, temporary functional changes are possible. Careful dosing and placement matter.
Safety and Candidacy
Tell your provider about pregnancy or breastfeeding, infection at the site, neuromuscular conditions, swallowing or breathing problems, medications, and all prior botulinum toxin treatment.
Rarely, botulinum toxin effects may spread. Urgent symptoms include difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing and generalized weakness.
