Biostimulators (Sculptra & Radiesse)
Sculptra and Radiesse treatment planning for gradual collagen support, structural correction, and selected facial or body concerns.
How are Sculptra and Radiesse different?
Sculptra uses poly-L-lactic acid for gradual collagen stimulation; Radiesse uses calcium hydroxylapatite gel for immediate support plus collagen stimulation.
Are biostimulators reversible like hyaluronic-acid filler?
No. They cannot be predictably dissolved with hyaluronidase, so conservative planning and product selection are especially important.
When do results develop?
Sculptra changes develop gradually; Radiesse can provide immediate correction with continued tissue response. Timing and duration vary.
Where should they not be used?
Product labeling, anatomy, and provider training govern treatment areas. Radiesse safety is not established for lips or around the eyes.
What Are Biostimulators?
Biostimulators are injectable products that provide correction while encouraging the body to build structural proteins over time. SkinHealth offers Sculptra, made with poly-L-lactic acid, and Radiesse, made with calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in a gel carrier.
They are not interchangeable and are not simply longer-lasting versions of hyaluronic-acid filler.
Sculptra vs. Radiesse
Sculptra is generally used as a series to create gradual change through collagen stimulation. Radiesse can provide immediate structural support from its gel carrier while also supporting collagen production. Product selection depends on the treatment area, tissue thickness, desired timing, anatomy, and approved or clinically appropriate use.
Unlike hyaluronic-acid filler, these products cannot be predictably dissolved with hyaluronidase. Conservative planning matters.
What to Expect
Your provider reviews medical history, allergies, medications, immune conditions, active infection, scarring tendency, prior filler, dental work, and goals. Temporary swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, itching, firmness, asymmetry, lumps, nodules, or infection can occur.
Sculptra results develop gradually and may require a series. Radiesse produces more immediate correction with continued tissue response. Maintenance and duration vary.
Safety and Urgent Symptoms
Rare intravascular injection can cause skin injury, vision abnormalities, blindness, or stroke. Seek immediate evaluation for unusual pain, white or dusky skin, vision change, weakness, facial drooping, or difficulty speaking.
Radiesse labeling notes that safety is not established in the lips or around the eyes. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, active infection, severe allergies, bleeding disorders, or product-specific contraindications require discussion.
